There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3

Wow….I just don’t know what to say other than wow!  Lost, as usual, was great tonight and surprisingly forthcoming with answers!

Who would’ve thought that Sawyer would sacrifice himself and that Jack would have ended up playing the long con on the entire world?     I just have one question: what happened to Sawyer’s shirt as he swam in the ocean?  Are he and Drunk Julie gonna hook up? Hurley can beat ?EKO? at chess?  What happened to Jeremy Bentham?

Did you catch the commercial right before the last segment in part two?  The commercial for  the Octagon  Global Recruiting?

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=V0PkRJRSv3M]

The days listed in the commercial are actually the days of the San Diego Comic-Con where the Lost producers usually reveal something pretty big (like last year’s Orchid Video).
Ok, that’s more than one question, but that IS how Lost operates.  Answer question, raise five more!
So, here is an initial recap from our friends at Lostpedia.com! Please, leave some comments and let me know what you thought of the Season 4 Finale.

On the Island

In the Orchid’s Greenhouse

Alpert comes to the rescue

Alpert comes to the rescue

Jack and Sawyer catch up with Hurley at the Orchid. John is trying to figure out how to enter the station. Jack approaches Locke, and the two have a “leadership discussion” according to Hurley. Locke tells Jack that he has to lie when he gets off the island to protect it. Locke also tries to persuade Jack to stay on the island and fulfill his destiny, suggesting that the island is a place where miracles happen. Jack says there’s no such thing as miracles, and chooses to leave with Hurley and Sawyer for the helicopter, although John warns them that Keamy would be there.

Ben is taken by Keamy to the helicopter where they find Frank handcuffed. Kate claims to be running from The Others, and finds the helicopter. The Others surprise Keamy’s men and kill them. Richard Alpert shoots Keamy in the back, and he is left presumed dead. Kate frees Ben from his restraints. She heads back to the helicopter while Ben heads back to the Orchid.

On the beach

Dan comes back from the freighter with an empty raft. He tells Juliet about the freighter and how it is going to try to get a close as possible. Dan is going to get water whilst Juliet gets the next group ready. She thanks him for helping the survivors.

Miles, confronted by Rose

Miles, confronted by Rose

Meanwhile, Miles is helping himself to food supplies under Rose’s watchful eye. Charlotte is packing her bag. Dan arrives and tells the two of them that he is leaving in 10 minutes and they need to be on the boat. Miles tells him that, despite knowing that the situation is dire, he is going to stay. Dan then leaves.

Charlotte doesn't want to leave

Charlotte doesn’t want to leave

Miles is surprised that Charlotte wants to leave the Island, after all that time she spent “trying to get back” here. Charlotte asks what he means, but Miles is evasive.

Some time later, Charlotte approaches Dan and tells him that she is going to stay on the island “for now”. Dan points that “now” on the island could mean “forever”. Charlotte replies “Would it make any sense if I told you I’m still looking for where I was born?” They part affectionately and Daniel, now alone, goes back on the crowded raft. Juliet tells Dan that she will not leave the island until everyone is safe aboard the freighter, reassuring Dan that “we’ll still be here when you get back”. Dan seems troubled. He boards the raft with a few survivors, and they leave for the freighter.

In the Orchid

Locke and Ben at the Orchid

Locke and Ben at the Orchid

Ben finds Locke with Jack. Locke has not yet explained to Jack that they are going to move the Island but there is no time. Locke goes with Ben in the elevator, and the two descend.

Locke and Ben exit the elevator and find themselves in the Orchid Station. As they walk inside, Locke observes the various equipment and a nearby television. He looks to Ben and asks if that’s the “magic box“. Ben looks back at Locke with an absurd look and answers “no”. Ben then offers Locke a video tape to answer all his questions about the station. Locke puts it in the television and Dr. Edgar Halliwax appears. In the video, Halliwax instructs to not place metal objects inside the “vault”. The vault is seen as a chamber that holds the power to travel time to whatever is inside it. Locke looks at Ben and sees him piling metal objects inside the vault.

Keamy is still alive

Keamy is still alive

The elevator opens to reveal Keamy – still alive. Keamy pulls out a knife and carefully enters the Orchid. He begins to explain to Ben, who is hiding away, that if Ben kills him the entire freighter will be destroyed and many innocent people killed. He begins to mock Alex’s death, but suddenly Locke appears. Locke explains that he has no conflict with Keamy and that Keamy should allow the innocent people on the freighter to live. Ben, noticing Keamy is distracted, charges out with his collapsible baton and attacks, knocking the knife from Keamy’s hand. Once Keamy is knocked down, Ben grabs his fallen knife starts stabbing him repeatedly. Locke pulls him off in an attempt to save Keamy and those on the freighter, but the damage is done and Keamy is left dying. Keamy tells Ben that Widmore will find him. Despite Locke’s best efforts to save him, Keamy dies. Locke tells Ben that he just killed everyone on the freighter, to which Ben coldly responds, “So?”

Ben sacrifices himself for the Island

Ben sacrifices himself for the Island

The Island "moves"

The Island “moves”

After killing Keamy, Ben seeks to go beyond the vault. Locke stops him and demands to know why Ben killed Keamy, knowing it would end the lives of many innocent people on the freighter. Ben admits it was the wrong thing to do and that his grief over Alex clouded his judgment. Ben tells Locke not to make the same mistakes as the new leader. Locke is subsequently confused. Ben tells him that there is a price to pay to move the Island. The person that moves it must leave it and never return there. Locke is reluctant to let Ben leave but Ben offers a handshake, apologizing for all the misery he has inflicted on Locke. Locke accepts the handshake and Ben darts off into the vault.

Inside, the explosion opened a pathway into the island interior. Ben goes into a tunnel that lead to a series of stairs. After falling down and cutting himself, Ben finds himself inside a dark and icy room. There, across from Ben, is established a wall with a large wheel. Ben proceeds to turn the wheel, though with great difficulty. The more the wheel is turned, the brighter the room becomes. Outside, the entire Island emanates an otherworldly noise. Suddenly, a light envelopes the Island and everything within the light disappears. Ben, himself, is shot forward through time to the year 2005, in the Sahara Desert, where he begins the events of The Shape of Things to Come.

On the Freighter

"You can go now."

You can go now.”

The freighter is destroyed

The freighter is destroyed

Desmond, Jin, and Kevin/Michael discover the C4 rigged to the boat. Michael finds a canister of liquid nitrogen and sprays it on the bomb’s battery to freeze it and buy time before the bomb goes off. Desmond and Jin frantically search for a way to safely disarm the explosives. When Keamy dies, the bomb gets armed, but does not explode immediately due to Michael’s ingenuity in keeping the battery cool with the nitrogen. With the bomb armed, Jin tells Desmond to leave and stays behind to attempt to determine a way to disarm the bomb. When the helicopter arrives, Jin tries to run to the door, but he misses the helicopter taking off. Christian Shephard appears, and tells Michael “you can go now”, and then the boat explodes.

On the Helicopter

The helicopter leaves the Island

The helicopter leaves the Island

Sawyer jumps

Sawyer jumps

Frank, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid and Hurley board the helicopter and take off to the freighter. Along the way, Frank notices that the helicopter is leaking gas, from a stray bullet hole. Because fuel is so low, Frank doesn’t think they’ll make it to the freighter. He says they have to figure out how to drop 200 lbs. Sawyer kisses Kate, whispers something in her ear, and jumps from the helicopter, enabling the rest of the passengers to make it to the freighter. Once they find the freighter, Desmond is frantically waving at them and telling them there is a bomb about to go off. Frank lands anyway, and hurriedly starts filling up the tank and patching the leak. Everyone gets back on board, including Sun, although she begs them to wait for Jin. However, Frank takes off immediately, and Sun is frantic. When the boat explodes, Sun is distraught.

While heading back to the island, a bright light floods the sky and the island vanishes. Low on fuel and with nowhere to land, Frank tells them to put on life-jackets and prepare for impact. The survivors swim towards the life raft thrown into the water by Sayid moments before impact. Frank rescues Desmond, who is floating face down in the water. Desmond is not breathing, but Jack resuscitates him.

Back on the beach

Juliet is on the beach, alone, with a bottle of Rum. Sawyer arrives on the beach having leapt from the helicopter. Seeing the bottle, asks what Juliet is celebrating but Juliet tells him that she is not celebrating, pointing to the smoke emanating from the destroyed freighter.

After the Island is moved

The people on the life-raft arrives near the Searcher

The people on the life-raft arrives near the Searcher

Jack, Kate, Aaron, Sayid, Hurley, Sun, Frank, and Desmond continue to float on the life-raft. Everyone is quiet until Hurley observes that “Locke moved the Island”. Jack becomes agitated and disagrees. As the two argue, Frank notices a nearby light and realizes it is a ship. Everyone begins shouting and the ship begins pulling up beside the life-raft. At this point Jack suddenly remembers Locke telling him to lie about what has happened to them, realizes that it must be done, and hastily shares this plan with the others in the life raft.

To each other's suprise, Desmond and Penelope reunite

To each other’s suprise, Desmond and Penelope reunite

Onboard the Searcher, a crewman, who is actually Henrik from the listening station frantically moves back and forth and calls out for “Ms. Widmore”. Penelope exits the bridge to see what was happening. She notices Desmond and the two make eye contact. Desmond jumps onto some netting to pull himself up to the ship and rushes to meet Penelope on the deck. Reunited, Desmond quickly introduces Penelope to the others from the life raft. Jack tells Penelope seriously that they need to talk.

A week later, the Oceanic Six prepare to depart from Penelope’s freighter with a well established cover story, while Desmond and Frank stay behind. Jack tells Desmond to be careful now that they know what Widmore is capable of, then quotes Desmond — “See you in another life, brother”. The Oceanic Six get on the life-raft and head for the island of Sumba.

Flashforward

Hurley

An older Walt visits Hurley

An older Walt visits Hurley

Walt visits Hurley in the mental institute, with his grandmother standing by to make sure Hurley is “safe”. Walt asks why nobody came to visit him after their rescue. Hurley apologizes, but Walt adds that one person did come to see him: Jeremy Bentham. Walt asks why Bentham and the Oceanic Six are all lying. Hurley whispers that they are lying to protect the people that remained on the Island.

Sayid

Sayid comes for Hurley

Sayid comes for Hurley

Sayid arrives at Hurley’s mental institute late at night and executes a man in the car park who has been stalking Hurley for over a week. Sayid finds Hurley playing chess, apparently alone, opposite an empty chair. Sayid wants Hurley to come with him, “somewhere safe”. Hurley replies that he hasn’t seen him in “like forever” and doesn’t understand why he should join him. Sayid replies that “circumstances have changed”: Bentham is dead, having supposedly killed himself 2 days ago. Hurley doesn’t want to call Bentham by this alias and is about to call him by his real name but Sayid stops him, adding that they are being watched. Hurley says that he has been regular conversations with dead people, and the last thing he needs is paranoia. Sayid replies that he has just killed a man who has been watching Hurley for a week and that paranoia keeps him alive. Sayid assures Hurley that they are not going back to the island, merely “somewhere safe”. Hurley accepts, but just as he is about to leave the room, he plays one more time on his chessboard, beating the opponent supposedly in the empty chair: Mr. Eko.

Sun

Sun goes to see Widmore in London

Sun goes to see Widmore in London

Sun approaches a restaurant in London while talking to her mother and Ji Yeon, now speaking, on the phone. Charles Widmore emerges from the restaurant. Sun approaches him and presents herself as the daughter of Paik, and the managing director of Paik Industries. Widmore recognizes the name and inquires about her father. Sun confronts Widmore with the knowledge that he is aware of her true identity, adding that Widmore knows that they have been lying abput their experiences. She then suggests that she and Widmore have common interests. She gives him her Paik business card, suggesting he call when ready to talk. Finally she reminds Widmore that “they are not the only one who left the Island”. Widmore, surprised, asks why she would want to cooperate with him. Without answering, she leaves.

Kate

"Claire" in Aaron's room

“Claire” in Aaron’s room

Kate wakes in her home to the sound of footsteps, but no one is there. The phone rings: a male voice, speaking in reverse, says “The island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late”. She hears footsteps again and retrieves a gun from her closet. Checking on Aaron, she confronts the intruder bending over his crib, only to find that it is Claire. Claire warns Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island. Suddenly Kate wakes up a second time and quickly checks on Aaron: there is no intruder and no sign of Claire.

Jack

John Locke is revealed to be the late Jeremy Bentham

John Locke is revealed to be the late Jeremy Bentham

Picking up exactly where the final scene of “Through The Looking Glass” left off, with Jack calling after Kate’s car “We have to go back!”, Kate reverses the car, gets out, and confronts Jack. She condemns Jack for wanting to go back to the Island, for calling her for 2 days straight whilst high on pills and for showing her the obituary for Jeremy Bentham. She explains that Jeremy Bentham had met with her and she knew from the first moment that he was crazy, and that she can’t believe Jack would trust him. Jack says he listened to Bentham because he was told that it was the only way to save Kate and Aaron. Kate slaps him for abandoning she and Aaron. Jack tries to apologize, but Kate tells him she spent the last three years trying to forget all the horrible things that happened in the days that they left. She tells him she won’t go back, gets back in the car and speeds away.

Jack, still apparently drunk and high, drives to the funeral parlor after hours. He breaks in and approaches the casket, noticing that no one has yet signed the release form for Bentham’s body. Ben suddenly enters the room. Jack says that Bentham had told him Ben was off the Island, Jack and Kate having spoken to Bentham about a month prior. Bentham had said that after Jack left the island “some very bad things happened” and it was Jack’s fault for leaving. Bentham added that Jack had to come back. Ben replies that he has heard about Jack riding passenger planes, hoping they’ll crash. Ben describes this as “very dark”. Ben tells Jack he is here to let him know that the Island wont let him come alone: “all of you have to go back”. Jack says he doesn’t know where Sayid is, Hurley is insane, Sun blames Jack for Jin’s death, and Kate doesn’t even want to talk to him anymore. Ben says that this is the only way: all of them have to do it together, and that Ben has a few ideas about how it is to be done and is willing to help. However he specifies that all of them must return, including the deceased Bentham, who is revealed to be none other than John Locke.

Trivia

General

  • Penelope’s boat is named the Searcher.
  • Each year the producers have a special name for a secret scene in that year’s finale. This year’s special name turned about to be literal – “Frozen Donkey Wheel”, referring to the frozen wheel Ben has to turn to activate the teleportation of the island.
  • During her flash-forward dream sequence, Kate receives a garbled phone call. When played backwards, the message states: “The Island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late.”
  • As the Oceanic Six arrive on Membata, the scenery of the Membata’s shore is EXACTLY the same as Elliot’s second flashback from LOST: Via Domus, even the camera angle and position is the same as the game’s. This most likely was done on purpose.

Production notes

  • This is the only episode of season 4 in which all credited cast members appear.
  • This is the second time an episode of Lost features footage filmed outside of the United States. The London scene between Sun and Charles Widmore was filmed in London due to Alan Dale performing on stage in the West End production of Spamalot during filming of the second block of Season 4. The first time was during The Shape of Things to Come.

Bloopers and continuity errors

  • Jack’s beard is visibly shorter than it was in “Through the Looking Glass
  • In the scene where Ben is trying to turn the large wheel in the icy cavern, he sticks his crowbar into the hole at the end of one of the pegs. As he does so, the teeth of the crowbar face to the right from the viewer’s perspective. However, in the next scene where he’s pressing his face against it, the teeth face left. When he removes it from the hole, the teeth face right again.
  • When the Oceanic 6 wash ashore in Sumba, the natives speak in Thai, not Indonesian. One native utters the phrase “Mah Nee” which means “Come Here” in Thai.
  • Desmond explains that severing the connection from the explosive to the battery would automatically detonate the failsafe. While these failsafes do exist, freezing the battery (hence stopping the electrical connectivity) would still cause the explosive to detonate.
  • On Day 91 (“Through the Looking Glass“), Penny told Charlie she was not on a boat. On Day 100, she is on the Search,a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Thinking Twice About Absorbing Debt Into a Mortgage

I’m very grateful.  I have been nosing around financial guru Dave Ramsey’s forums and ran across a post that probably saved me a bunch of money.

Let me backtrack for a moment.  Dave Ramsey isn’t a get rich quick guy, or a multi-level martketing guy or anything like that.  His philosophy is that debt is bad and encourages families to do everything in their ability to get rid of debt.   Once out of debt, Ramsey advises those same families to save up 2 to 3 months salary in a savings account.  Ramsey basically preaches financial responsibility.

I’m like most people, in way too much debt.  I’m stressed about it and am looking for any way to get out of it.  I thought about refinancing the house and absorbing our credit card debt.  The I ran across the following sage advice:

There’s a good reason lenders encourage folks to get cash out. They make a lot more money. But for the borrower, a cash out refi is a terribly expensive way to borrow money. In addition to putting up your home at risk as collateral to secure the debt, you’re paying interest for the entire life of the mortgage for the use of the cash. It’s actually a lot cheaper to borrow the money for a short term on a credit card. Because a loan is compound interest in reverse, Time is a more important factor than Rate in determining the total Interest. If you stretch out a loan for a long time to have a lower payment, it will still cost more, even if the rate is substantially lower.

To give you an example, let’s suppose you were getting $30K cash out to pay off a bad car loan:

If you were paying $608 per month on a debt of $30,000 at 8.% it would be paid off in 60 months. The total interest would be $6,498.

If you refinanced it in a cash-out mortgage for 30 years at 5.5% with 2.0% closing costs rolled in, the payment on $30,600 would only be $173.74 per month. But over the 30 years, the total interest would be $31,948. That’s 4.9 times more interest for the same amount of initial debt.

At the end of 60 months when the original debt would have been paid off, you’ll still have 300 payments (25. years) of that extra $173.74 to go on the mortgage. Instead of having it paid off at that 60 month point, you will have already paid $8,118 in interest, and will still owe $28,293 of the original $30,000 debt.

If you were to sell the home in 5 years, carrying that extra $28,293 with 1.5% closing costs into a new 30 year mortgage at 6% would give you an extra $172.17 per month on the payment for the next mortgage, and would cost you $33,266 more interest over the life of the loan. So you’d be paying a total of $41,383 interest on a debt that you could have paid off in 60 months at a cost of $6,498 in interest if you hadn’t taken any cash out in the first place.

It’s even worse if you refi a mortgage that has less time remaining than you refinance.

If you owed $200,000 on your mortgage at 6.0% for 25. more years the payment for P&I would be $1289 and the total cost would be $386,581 with $186,581 in interest.

If you rolled in 2% closing costs plus the old debt into a new mortgage at 6.0% for 30. more years the payment for P&I on the total debt of $234,600 would be $1407 and the total cost would be $506,356 with $271,756 in interest. You’ve added $66,046 to the cost of the mortgage alone.

At 60 months when the original consumer debt would have been paid off, you will still owe $218,306 on the new mortgage. At that time you would only have owed $179,864 on the old mortgage. So instead of having the original debt paid off, you owe $38,441. That’s $8,441 more than the original deb was to start with.

I’m very grateful to see the numbers in a real world situation.  Rolling your debt into a mortage is a horrible idea!

Mario Kart Wii is Wonderful!

We’ve had Mario Kart Wii for a couple of weeks now, but it just isn’t getting old!  We’ve owned all the Mario Kart manifestations, going all the way back to the Nintendo 64!  I have to say that the Wii version is the best and mostest funnest!!

The graphics are gorgeous, but it is the gameplay that is the funnest.  I won’t bore you with specifics and details, as you can find them here (the Mario Wiki).

The race tracks are fun, and some are fiendishly hard.  All of the tracks from previous versions of the game are available, from N64 to Game Cube to the Game Boy!  While you are racing, you can make jumps and have your character do a trick by shaking the Wiimote.  This gives you an extra speed boost when you hit the ground.  And it makes the gameplay just that much more fun!

The two modes of play make a return. You can race or battle, but now you have to do both with 12 characters.  You and a buddy just can’t race or battle each other.  I have to say that is my biggest disappointment with Mario Kart Wii.  The AI is ruthless too…you can be in first place and !!bingo bango!! you’ve dropped back into twelfth in .5 seconds flat!  I’ve been zapped with lightning, hit by a red shell, hit by a green shell, and slipped on a banana all at the same time!  Talk about wanting to curse like a pirate!!

You can do Ghost Time Trials, in one player mode, where you can just race against one computer opponent.  That is fun, but again, that darn AI is hard as heck to beat.

As you race and win, characters and vehicles are unlocked.  According to the cheater websites, I sure have a long way to go before I unlock most everything!

When it comes to Battle Mode, I’m still undecided.  It used to be fun to battle up to 4 friends and blow each other up and laugh and giggle.  Mario Kart Wii forces you to play in a twelve character battle, with huge arenas to chase down the enemy.  The battlegrounds are fun, but just too big.  I can go an entire battle without really seeing anybody else.

[UPDATE 6-11-08:  MY 9 YEAR OLD SON FOUND OUT HOW TO TURN OFF THE AI!!  THERE IS A "RULES" ICON ON THE UPPER RIGHT SCREEN WHEN YOU PICK YOUR CHARACTERS.  FROM THERE YOU CAN TURN OFF THE COMPUTER! HAPPY RACING!]

Online play is a snap.  Just log into the the Nintendo WFC and bam! you are ready to play.  Adding friends is as easy as inputing a friend code.  My kids get a kick out of playing with people in Japan and Germany or Canada.  There is no chat feature or any other way to interact with other players, so it is safe for kids to just jump in and play.

I do have to say that Mario Kart Wii is super addicting…much more so than Super Smash Bros Brawl.  The game play doesn’t get stale, especially with the online play feature.  Now, if I could actually win some races against my stinky kids I’d be a happy man!

If you can save to get this game, it is totally worth it!  Leave a comment with your friend code and I’ll send you mine!  I need to beat somebody!

My Two Great Kids

I posted a blog entry the other day praising my oldest daughter! She is awesome and I love her very much.

But I have two more totally great kids as well. Bekah is going to be in 6th grade and Nate is going to be in the 4th grade. I love them bunches and have some things of theirs to share too.

Bekah is our family’s literary genius. She loves to write and wrote the two following poems. Click on the links to hear her narrate her own poems:

Snakes

Long Dark Shadow

At school, her teacher has let her and her friend Hadely create a claymation video, which is below.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjl4IRtUhKc]

Nathan is a budding writer as well. Below you will find two of his stories. The first one is a fiction story about meeting a friend.

click here if you need a larger version

The second story is an opinion piece. Who would’ve known that I spawned such environmentally aware children?

I am so proud of all three of my kids and I want to brag on all of them because they are all so awesome!

The Darkness – Permission To Land

Permission to Land

Permission to Land was released in August of 2003, so I’ve missed out on this jewel for almost five years now!!

The Darkness is an over-the-top metal band that is all about how music used to be – FUN!! This is what rock is really all about! The guitars wail, the bass and drums pound your skull and the vocals….what can you say about the vocals? Totally over the top and totally catchy!! Crap, I just can’t stop listening to this album!! I have to say that I Believe In a Thing Called Love is the catchiest darn song I’ve ever heard in my life.

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=6-4VOLeKBOw]

There is some language on the album, so I wouldn’t let your youngsters listen to all the songs. The first song is called “Black Shuck” and I’m sure you can guess what word they are using to rhyme.

Iron Man is a must see!

Just saw Iron Man and it was phenomenal!!  Really leaves you wanting more.  Lots of action, great metal soundtrack and Robert Downey Jr. totally nails Tony Stark’s character.

If you love comic book movies, this one is one of the best….I’d rate it number 3, with Batman Begins number 1 and Spiderman 2 in second place.

Here is the trailer, just in case you haven’t seen it yet:

There's No Place Like Home, Part 1

OH MY GOODNESS!! Lost was so awesome last night! The show was near perfect with their multi-faceted flashbacks between Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sun. Jack finds out that Claire was (is?) his sister and we find out the ageless Richard Alpert has his own army! Sweetness!!

We finally get to see the Orchid station. Here is the video from last year’s Comic-con that introduced us to the Orchid station.
[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=bSZVkch09Qg]

As always, here is the awesome recap from Lostpedia.com. I suggest you actually click on the link and read everything for yourself! For more info, also check out The Lost Blog and The Tail Section.

Trivia

General

The Geronimo Jackson record jacket at Hurley's party

The Geronimo Jackson record jacket at Hurley’s party

  • “Membata,” the name of the island Oceanic claimed the Six lived on, is Indonesian for “doubt” or “uncertainty”.
  • Sawyer refers to the Barracks as “New Otherton,” the producers’ nickname for the location.
  • A Geronimo Jackson record jacket can be seen near the DJ at Hurley’s party.
  • The mirror Ben uses is called a heliograph[1], or signaling mirror[2]. They were commonly used by military forces in the early half of the 20th century. They are still included in survival kits for emergency signaling to search and rescue aircraft.
  • At Hurley’s surprise birthday party, Sayid is seen sporting a wedding band, implying that he and Nadia have been married by this point.

Production notes

  • Claire does not appear in this episode.
  • The Oceanic 6 were aboard a United States Coast Guard (USCG)[3] Lockheed HC-130[4] search and rescue transport aircraft being flown by two USCG Lieutenants (O-3).
  • The Lockheed HC-130 number 1717 was acquired by the USCG under an US Air Force (USAF) aircraft purchase contract addendum in 1986[5].
  • Prior to being designated 1717 by the USCG, the USAF originally numbered the aircraft 0420[6], another reference to the Numbers.
  • The Oceanic 6 landed at Kalaeloa Airport[7], home of the Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Barbers Point[8], as indicated by the plane’s markings and the distinctive air traffic control tower[9].
  • The press conference was most likely held in the CGAS hangars[10].
  • Several large sea turtles can be seen on the daytime beach shots. As the turtles are heavily protected by the government, it is likely that the crew was unable to remove the turtles from the shots before filming.

Bloopers and continuity errors

  • In the scene where Jack and Kate bump into Sawyer and Miles, Kate is seen talking to Jack with only Sawyer in the background. After a quick shot of Jack turning around, the camera returns to Kate which suddenly has Miles prominently in the background.
  • The lower four digits displaying “2342” on the Camaro’s instrument panel would not appear on a 1970-1972 Camaro’s odometer. Everything else about the odometer seems accurate, however, so the remaining digits were most likely added to ensure that all of the numbers appeared.
    • The lower four digit display is suspose to represent a trip meter, but, there was no trip meter on a 1970-72 Camaro. A trip meter did not appear on the dashboard instrument cluster until 1984.
  • Ben retracts his baton just before handing it to Locke. Ben easily retracts the baton. Retracting telescopic batons with such ease is usually impossible, unless it was deployed extremely weakly which would render the baton less effective in any combat situation. Also, there is no sign of Ben ever extending the baton. Extending the baton would make it impossible to fit in a pocket. It is safe to assume that showing Ben retracting the baton was purely for dramatic purposes because there was no scenario shown that would have allowed him to deploy the weapon, and furthermore deploy it a weak manner that would be less effective in combat and allow him to retract it so easily.
