metalman777Lost Lost, recap, This Place Is Death

“This Place is Death” is the fifth episode of Season 5 of Lost, originally broadcast on February 11, 2009. Locke takes on the burden to stop the island’s increasingly violent shifts through time. Meanwhile, Ben hits a roadblock in his attempt to reunite the Oceanic 6 and bring them back to the island. (Lostpedia.com’s synopsis of the episode. Definitely click here to read it!)
Key Points from this episode (in no particular order):
- There is a quick scene in 5×05, “This Place is Death” that features Montan listening to a transmission of The Numbers on a radio. They make a plan to head to the radio tower to see if they can make use of the antenna to call for help. Those with sharp ears, however, recognized something familiar in the voice repeating 4 8 15 16 23 42 on the radio. Could it really be Hurley? (from Sledgeweb’s Lost…Stuff. link has audio samples!)
- We also got our first look at the mysterious Temple we’ve heard so much about in tonight’s episode. We learn that the temple (which is where Montaun lost his arm) has similar looking Glyphs on the side of it as what was used on the countdown timer in the Swan Station (the hatch). This seems a little odd when you consider that the Temple is supposedly an ancient building that predates the Dharma Initiative, and the Swan Station was built in the 70s/80s. It is also possible speculation at this point that the Temple may be Smokey’s home. I base this mostly on the connection with Ben, who seemed to be able to call Smokey to the slaughter last season, and also is the one who sent his people to the Temple for safety. Ben has referred to the Temple as “the last safe place on the island.” (from Sledgeweb’s Lost….Stuff)
- Are there any inconsistencies with Charlotte’s backstory? She says she was on the island as a child, and then moved away. Last season we found out she was born in 1979. If she moved away when she was 7 or 8, it would have been in the late 1980s… around the same time Rousseau landed on the island. Ben killed his father in 1992, the date of the Purge. He came to the island in the early 1970s and lived there from that point on, so he would have had some memory of Charlotte, even if she’d just been a child. Why didn’t he say anything about that last season, and instead let on like he believed her backstory, that she’d been born in Essex, England? Season 5 opened with Pierre Chang putting on “Shotgun Willie” by Willie Nelson, a song from a 1973 album. So it couldn’t have been before that, but it could have been after that. The clothing he’s wearing suggests it’s still early 70s. We see them constructing the Orchid, because he goes down into it and passes by Daniel. SO… how did Charlotte know about the well? If she was born in 1979, but the Orchid had been built and the well destroyed in the early 70s, how could she have known about it? (from Nik at Nite)
- Did You Notice?:As Sun approaches Ben and company at the marina, she walks by a boat called the Illusion…The Temple is covered in hieroglyphics, some of them the same as the red symbols that appeared in the Swan station when the countdown clock reached zero…Jin picks up the ballerina music box on the beach, the same one that Sayid will later fix for Rousseau when she’s holding him captive in “Solitary.”…The church where Hawking is looks exactly like the one they used for Christian’s memorial service….Desmond totally knows who Hawking is the moment he sees her…Just two episodes ago, Ms. Hawking suggests that if Ben doesn’t get EVERYONE to her immediately, “God help us all…” [Music swells, terror sets in....] And now she’s more like, “Jolly good, pip pip, let’s all to the batcaves!” Huh? (from Nik at Nite)
- Now turning the attention to the old architecture featured in this episode. The temple itself – the house of the Monster? If the temple is in the Dark Territory, that would make sense. But the blast door map referencing a number of Cerberus Vent points – which I had always assumed were where the Monster came from… so either there are multiple temples or the blast door map CV points mean something else. Speaking of the temple though, much love to DocArzt and friends who have a translation screencap of those hieroglyphs here! Nothing stands out as amazingly revelationy though, I’m afraid. (from Lostpedia Blog)
- Sympathy to Charlotte, who could be Annie? Her dying words are about chocolate… and when we first meet Annie in Ben’s flashback she’s offering him an Apollo bar. It’s a stretch of a theory, but one might think Charlotte’s mom would make her change her name after they left (though this theory doesn’t work when Charlotte is much younger than Ben). (from Lostpedia Blog)
- Digging deeper into the Charlotte/Lewis connection, we sinker deeper into an abyss of subtext. Along the way, we pass A Grief Observed, Lewis’ chronicle about the death of his companion, Joy, and how it tested his Christian faith. Then, there’s The Great Divorce, which actually isn’t about marital dissolution but a fantastical vision of the afterlife, à la Dante’s Inferno, although it was actually meant as a parable about living in the here and now. (The title is a riff on — and the book a response to — William Blake’s surreal manifesto, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.) These are stories about the underworld, the mythical place where souls hang after they’ve shed the mortal coil. And now recall the Egyptian hieroglyphics in “The Hatch,” which according to the producers of Lost translated into ”Underworld.” And Smokey’s scene-stealing, arm -ripping presence in this episode reminds us that the guy who made the Map in “The Hatch” called the Monster by a different name: ”Cerberus,” the three-headed demon dog that guarded the gates of Hades. And finally, know that Christian Shepherd, the dude with the Jesus pun name, played the part of ”psychopomp” in this episode — a ”psychopomp” being a mythic underworld figure who serves as a ”guide to souls,” escorting the dead between states of existence. Psychopomp?! Yes: Psychopomp! Psychopomp! Psychopomp! Psychopomp! You can’t just say it enough. PSYCHOPOMP! (from Doc Jensen)
- Remember when Rousseau totally freaked out when she saw Jin again on the beach? ”I saw you disappear!” she exclaimed. In her shock, I saw a simple answer to the time travel noodle-cooker that many of you have been puzzling over since last week: Did the French Lady recognize Jin when she first met the castaways in Season 1? The answer could very well be: Does it matter? For Rousseau, Reappearing Jin was one more scary, inexplicable thing in a scary, inexplicable situation that was about to become a way of life. By the time their lives intersected once more in her future timeline, seeing Jin again (if she even recognized him), the significance probably just bounced off her. ”Oh. You again. Whatever.” (from Doc Jensen)
- The implication of all these ”clues” is that there seems to be some kind of time loop in play, one in which some or all of the castaways are the Jinns in the aforementioned magical novel analogy; they are objects that must be returned to where they belong in order to avoid catastrophic paradox and preserve the established time-space continuum. Which, I think, is a pretty good explanation for what Ms. Hawking and her off-Island crew of quantum mechanics are attempting to do. (Too supernatural for you? Well, tough. The naturalists in the crowd got a big disclaimer from Faraday last night when he said: ”Bringing back to the people who left to stop these temporal shifts, that’s where we leave science behind.”)
Crazy. Okay. But here’s where all of this gets really great. The mysterious author of The New Time Travelers? His name is David Toomey. Ring bells? It should. David = Dave, Hurley’s imaginary friend from the Loony Bin. Another Jinn. Toomey = Sam Toomey, another victim of The Numbers’ curse. Best friend to Leonard Simms, one of Hurley’s loony bin friends. In fact, the whole reason Hurley went to Australia was to find Toomey. Instead, he learned the dude had shot himself years earlier. (from Doc Jensen)

metalman777Lost Lost, recap

“The Little Prince” is the fourth episode of Season 5 of Lost, originally broadcast on February 4, 2009. Kate discovers that someone knows the secret of Aaron‘s true parental lineage. Meanwhile, the dramatic shifts through time place the lives of the remaining island survivors in extreme peril. (lostpedia.com)
Key points and things obsessed fans should note:
- A water bottle featuring Ajira Airway’s logo was seen in a boat on the Island. Juliet seems to know about the Ajira company, describing it to the other survivors as an airline based out of India which has flights across the entire planet.
Ajira Airways is a fictional airline company whose logo appeared briefly twice during a Lost Season 5 promotional music video on the ABC website, which featured future episode clips and the music video to the song “You Found Me” by the band The Fray.
The website Ajiraairways.com sports their tagline “destiny calls”; the same as the promotional tagline being used to promote the fifth season of Lost. (lostpedia.com)
- The name on the side of Ben’s van, “Canton Rainier” is an anagram of “reincarnation.” Does that bode well for John Locke’s dead body?
- Sun‘s surveillance report is partly legible. It has since been discovered that the report is from a Lost unrelated online game; it is therefore doubtful that Lee Chin or Melissa will figure prominently in future episodes. Full Report.
- Yes … we see Danielle Rousseau before she became Crazy Danielle Rousseau. But that’s not the juicy bit.In the midst of the raging storm, Rousseau (now being played by a younger actress) and her crewmates find an unconscious man floating on a piece of wreckage. They haul him to shore, and that’s when we see …JIN! JIN LIVES!Jin survived that massive freighter explosion (he was near the stern when that puppy blew), and now he’s been transported back 16 years to those halcyon days before Rousseau’s crew is beset by a horrific contagion and Rousseau’s baby (she’s pregnant at this point) has yet to be stolen by Ben. (from The Lost Blog)
- Rousseau’s ship was named Bésixdouze, which translates to “B six twelve.” And B612 just happens to be the name of the home asteroid once inhabited by The Little Prince. (from The Lost Blog)(also see The Mirror Matter Theory)
- So the nosebleeds happen in this order: Charlotte, Miles, Juliet. If they’re supposed to happen to people more quickly the longer they’ve been on the island, and Juliet’s been on there for 3 years (and notice hers happens after about the same number of flashes as Desmond’s did in The Constant, and he’s also been on the island for 3 years), then it stands to reason Miles was there slightly longer than Juliet, since his happens right before hers, and Charlotte much, much longer, since she starts bleeding about 4 jumps before the rest of them. Could this be a suggestion that the baby we saw in the first episode was Miles? Could Miles have been Dr. Chang’s son? When did Charlotte come to the island? Could the reason Miles doesn’t remember be because he was far too young? (from Nik at Nite)
- When Rousseau and her crew are on the boat, they keep referring to Montand by name. Montand was the guy Rousseau mentions in the season 1 finale when they’re heading to the Black Rock, and she tells them Montand lost his arm. (from Nik at Nite)
- (time jumping timeline) FLASH ONEDeparture Point: 1954, the Others vs. the H-bomb testers era of the Island. (As seen in last week’s episode, ”Jughead”)
Arrival Point: November 2004 — the night Boone died and Claire gave birth and Locke made the Hatch throw a blazing bat signal into the sky.
FLASH TWO
Departure Point: November 2004
Arrival Point: Hard to say. Clearly not a moment we’ve seen yet in the series — so I’m going to theorize that this moment has not yet happened: The castaways landed on a point in time after the departure of the Oceanic 6. That ”Ajira Airlines” water bottle? I’m thinking it came from the airplane that’s going to bring the Oceanic 6 back to the Island. Which means that it’s possible that the other party in the other outrigger — the ones that started firing on Locke and company — was Jack and company.
FLASH THREE
Departure Point: TBD. ”Thank you, Lord!” Sawyer bellowed as the screaming came across the sky to carry the castaways away from their attackers…
Arrival Point: Only to drop them in the middle of a storm at sea sometime in 1988. (”I take that back!” Sawyer retorted to the skies.) According to most Lost sources, 1988 was the year that Danielle Rousseau, 16 and pregnant, washed up on the Island with a bunch of French scientists. More on them next week.
BURNING TIME TRAVEL QUESTION NUMBER 1: How come the castaways got to keep the outrigger when they did the time warp shuffle? Shouldn’t that have been left behind in the previous time zone?
Answer: The question was actually asked and answered two episodes ago in ”The Lie.” If you recall, Juliet theorized that time travelers get to keep the stuff they’re holding or sitting in when they jump. (Also see: the compass that Time Indeterminate Richard Alpert gave John Locke to give to his 1954 self.) In other words: How about we just roll with this?
BURNING TIME TRAVEL QUESTION NUMBER 2: It appears that only the castaways are traveling through time. Which means that the Island isn’t traveling through time. Maybe. But we saw the Island disappear in the season finale. So…uh…huh?
Answer: I know this issue baffles many of you. Let’s make an appointment to discuss all things time travel in next week’s Doc Jensen column, posting Wednesday morning. (from Doc Jensen)
- The Ultimate Theory in Course Correction (a.k.a. “Oh Shutup Vozzek, That’s Just Preposterous!”)
It was creepy, it was eerie, and it was my favorite part of the episode: Sawyer & crew arriving back at ‘their camp’. Someone’s been eating all the porridge, drinking all the Dharma beer, and breaking the all island’s leash laws. Locke pointedly asks “I wonder when all this happened?” From the very beginning of this scene, something seemed off. And from the minute Juliet found the Ajira Airways water bottle to the final seconds of the bullet-ridden canoe-chase, I realized we were looking at the future.
For a moment, let’s imagine that the 815′ers failed at whatever the island needed them to do. Going with Hawking’s theory of course-correction, the island would still need to bring people to it. Jacob would still need some help. What we saw here was the next generation of LOST: one in which the plane that crashed came from India, one in which the crash survivors were just different people playing the same roles. Most things would occur along the same lines: they’d build a camp, they’d be terrorized by the smoke monster, there would be lots of fighting and gunfire. Eventually they’d find the remnants of the 815 camp and wonder what the hell it was, much the same way our characters found the Black Rock and the 4-toed statue. They’d also scrap with the Others – early and often.
So now let’s pretend for a minute that the group in the other outrigger canoe was comprised of the flight “518″ survivors. They see our main characters and assume they’re the Others. They give chase, take some shots, and then suddenly Locke and Sawyer’s canoe is whisked away: conveniently time-skipped back to the past (pouring rain and everything).
Desmond’s been saying it since season 2: “See you in another life”. Effectively this IS another life, just as the off-island world that the O6 now play conspiracy games in is another life as well. Another prophetic old statement by Jin to Hurley: “Everything is going to change”. Imagine that every time something changes we see another life… if the change is a minor one, all you’ll see are a few picture frames changing style. If the change is significant, and happens at the root level of LOST’s story, maybe another whole plane crash happened. I wouldn’t even be surprised to find out that Locke was leading his own group of Others in the first canoe, effectively chasing a version of his former, past self. Bananas? Definitely! But remember Frank Duckett’s words: “It’ll come back around”. Not to mention this would also make Sawyer’s sarcastic “Other Others” line ironically close to the truth
What we saw this episode was a really cool, really dark mirror universe of our existing storyline. It happened very fast, and we weren’t meant to see much. Reality turns out to be a very thinly veiled curtain on LOST, and the writers are yanking on it. But their story is their story, and it totally rocks. (from Dark UFO)
Here’s the trailer for next week’s episode:

metalman777Lost Lost, recap, television
I’m so glad that Lost is back on! What other show on tv to give you answers, only to make you ask twice as many questions. Love it or hate it, Lost is at the top of its game as episode 3 of season 5 premeired last night.

Normally I would copy and paste the episode’s recap from Lostpedia.com (which you can still find here), but my wife thinks it is jut too much to read. So instead, I have read dozens of blogs today and will bring to you all the juicy tidbits I found.
- Remember Boone’s story about his nanny? That he was a snot of a kid whose nanny would come every time he rang a bell, so he rang it constantly, forcing her to run up and down the stairs, until she tripped, fell and broke her neck? Then we had Ana Lucia’s mother, whose name was Teresa Cortez. And now… Daniel Faraday apparently destroyed the life of a woman named Theresa by giving her the Eloise experiment and not telling her to grab a constant along the way. But why is she comatose and not bleeding from the nose? Somehow she’s jumping through time, but not to the extent others are.
- Okay, “Jones” actually being Charles Widmore was the biggest squee moment of the episode for me….I loved that he refused to answer Widmore’s question about Penny, but I don’t know why Widmore wasn’t even more direct about her safety, and simply said, “Ben Linus has vowed to kill her if he finds her. Don’t let him find her.” Widmore doesn’t know that Ben is WITH Faraday’s mom right now, and he’s just walked Penny right into the trap. Something doesn’t feel right about this. I think Widmore is more omniscient than that. Hmm… (from Nik at Nite’s Lost Blog)
- Richard has lived on the island forever. For all intents and purposes (is that right?) Richard can and will live forever.
- Richard talks about the US Army as if it’s Dharma, I wonder what the difference is. Did the Army start Dharma, or were those military tests nothing more that bomb tests?
- The first time I watched this show I suspected that Ellie was Penny’s mom, but as I rewatched parts of it to write this revlysis I began to suspect that she is Ms. Hawking (I got her name right this time). If you watch again it really seems like the actress is doing her best Ms. Hawking impression. And Daniel did say they he recognized her.
- I think we were supposed to see the significance of Juliet choosing to go with Sawyer instead of Locke. If she had chosen Locke then it would have proved that she was still an Other at heart. It’s a pretty repetitive realization, but the writers continue to emphasize it in case we still doubt her devotions. (from Not Confused Just Lost)
- Note that Miles gets his vision of the four US soldiers when they walk over the ‘fresh grave’, meaning he can’t just commune with the dead haphazardly. It seems he needs to be in proximity to the corpses, which explains why he asked to be led to Naomi’s body. That doesn’t explain him being able to read the spirit of Mrs. Gardner’s grandson in his flashback though, although Miles did specifically call for his spirit that time. But even stranger, notice how Daniel doesn’t question Miles ability at all – he simply asks if the spirit told him what year it was. I’m thinking maybe Daniel had prior knowledge of Miles abilities, or maybe happenings on the island are so way far out there that no one really questions such unbelievable things much at this point. OR…… Maybe Daniel’s a bigger key to the time travel puzzle than we originally thought: accumulating past and future knowledge the same way Ben and Locke currently are. We already know he’s got a constant, which will keep his mind straight as he skips through time. We know for a fact that he eventually arrives at the Dharma era, and probably a whole lot of other time points. His brain is sharp, and the fact that he believes in and comprehends most of what’s going on can’t hurt either. And don’t forget that Daniel also arrived on the island with existing precogniscent knowledge, as evidenced by him trying to predict the cards from last season. The donkey wheel hadn’t even been turned yet. (from Dark UFO)
- Follow this link to see an article from Popular Mechanics and see if the writers and makers of Lost got close to reality concerning Jughead, the hydrogen bomb on the Island.

If you know me, then you know that I am mildly obsessed with the most awesome show on TV, Lost!
Now, you can just watch every week and be a casual observer of the show, but Lost takes on a total new dimension if you have the right tools.
There are many, many great blogs and writers who have many, many great thoughts deeper than mine and explain the intricacies of the show on an entirely new level.
The first and foremost authority on Lost would be Lostpedia.com. I can literally spend hours and hours on that website.
Start with one topic, say The Smoke Monster, and from there, you can jump to the Black Rock, and then move to Danielle Rousseau’s distress signal.
Lostpedia fleshes out the Lost canon and is updated by faithful viewers every week.
Besides Lostpedia, I listen to some podcasts on my iPod to get the most of my Lost obsession. These podcasts are a great way to learn more about the Lost episodes, and a great way to find out what I missed as I viewed the show. My favorite Lost Podcasts are:
I have run across two very good theories that might explain the story behind Lost.
There are many websites dedicated to Lost. Some are better than most. Here is a list of the few that I visit regularly:

Lost is back on! Life just got a whole lot mo’ betta!
I absolutely loved the first two episodes of Season 5! Way to start with a bang! So, let’s recap the first two episodes and see what we missed.
At 8:15 a.m., Pierre Chang wakes up at his home in Barracks, gives his baby a bottle before getting ready for the day as the record he puts on starts skipping. As Chang walks through the Barracks, a pregnant woman passes behind him. Inside one of the buildings, he begins shooting the second take of the DHARMA Initiative orientation video for the Arrow station, but is interrupted by a worker concerned about a problem at the Orchid. The worker leads Chang to the Orchid where men working underground have destroyed 6 drill heads trying to drill a seemingly impenetrable wall. Another worker tells Chang that there is an open chamber behind the wall, showing him a print-out revealing an image of the frozen wheel behind the wall. At this moment Chang discloses that there is an incredible amount of energy on the other side of the wall, almost limitless, and enough to make space and time travel possible. Chang tells the worker to do nothing more to the wall because infinite harmful energy could be released by doing so. As Chang leaves he bumps into another worker who is revealed to be Daniel Faraday dressed in a construction worker outfit.
On-Island
The results of the “Island moving” have immediate effects for all the survivors left behind. After the white flash, Locke finds that Richard and the Others have vanished, and that it is now raining. Meanwhile, Juliet and Sawyer notice that the burning freighter has mysteriously vanished, finding Bernard and Rose who frantically report that the camp itself has also disappeared. Daniel Faraday arrives with those from the Zodiac boat, including Neil Frogurt, and explains that “The camp isn’t gone, It hasn’t been built yet”. Faraday tells everyone that they must go to something that was man-made on the island, and Juliet points out that the Swan station is about a fifteen minutes hike from the beach. Meanwhile, Locke witnesses the Nigerian Beechcraft plane crash onto the Island. Investigating the wreckage, he is attacked by Ethan. Though Locke tries to tell him the truth, Ethan does not believe him and prepares to shoot him. However, a white light flashes, causing time to shift again. Locke looks to see that it is now night, and the Beechcraft has fallen from the cliff edge.
The other survivors also find themselves in night on their trek to the hatch. Sawyer demands that Faraday explain what is happening. Faraday says that it would be too hard to explain to a quantum physicist, much less Sawyer. However, he concedes and tells them to imagine the Island as a record, only now the record is skipping due to what Ben Linus did at the Orchid station. As a result, the Island is now dislodged in time, with either the island moving or the survivors. Faraday suggests that it is likely that they are the ones moving.
The group arrive at the Hatch, which is still a crater, prompting them to conclude that they are in a time after Flight 815 crashed. Sawyer argues that they could change the past by stopping Jack and the others from launching the helicopter (which they believe crashed in the ocean). Faraday, however, is adamant that the past is like thread – one can move back and forth but cannot under any circumstance begin a new one. Meanwhile, Locke encounters Richard Alpert, who gives him a compass which he must give to Richard again in a different timeframe. He also tells John that the only way to save the Island is to get those that left back. In order to do that, Locke is told that he will have to die.
Another flash occurs and the hiking group find themselves looking at an undiscovered hatch. Sawyer repeatedly knocks on the back door, but nobody responds. Faraday reiterates that Sawyer cannot get to Desmond. After everyone else leaves, however, Faraday himself knocks on the door and manages to speak with Desmond. Faraday tells Desmond that he is uniquely special, and that only he can help them. He instructs a confused Desmond to seek out his Daniel’s mother in Oxford if he escapes the Island.
Off-Island (three years later)
In 2007, Ben and Jack discuss their plan to find the other members of the Oceanic Six. Meanwhile, Hurley and Sayid arrive at a safehouse after Sayid killed a man spying on Hurley at the mental institute he resides in. However, the safehouse has been compromised, and Sayid battles several men. Though he manages to kill them, Sayid is shot with a poison dart rendering him unconscious. Hurley rescues him, and the two escape.
At an airport, on her way back to Los Angeles, Sun is confronted by Charles Widmore. Sun reveals her desire to kill Ben, a trait they seem to share. Meanwhile in LA, Kate is approached at home by a pair of lawyers, working for an unknown client. They seek to conduct a test to determine if Aaron is actually Kate’s child. Kate refuses to allow the test, and when the lawyers leave to enlist the help of law enforcement, Kate frantically packs bag, grabs Aaron and runs.
Back at the funeral parlor Jack asks Ben how everything happened, to which Ben replies it was because they left. They leave the parlor with Locke’s body in tow, where they discover that Hurley has broken out, hindering Ben’s plan to reunite the Oceanic Six. Finally, on a sailing boat with Penny in an unknown location, Desmond wakes up, remembering what Faraday told him. While Penny brushes off the experience as a bad dream, Desmond realizes that it was actually a memory. He sets off for Oxford to find Daniel’s mother.
Trivia
General
Production notes
Bloopers and continuity errors
- When asked if all of the Oceanic survivors were accounted for, Sawyer replies that Locke wasn’t with them, but doesn’t mention Claire.
- After Desmond recalls his “memory” he goes above deck to begin pulling up the anchor, but in actuality the chain is going in the reverse direction, lowering the anchor.
- When Daniel Faraday is on the raft, Neil Frogurt can be seen next to him. Neil Frogurt was never on the raft in the Season 4 finale.
Recurring themes
- The people on the Island are skipping through time. (Time)
- The public begins to grow suspicious of Aaron’s paternity. (Parent Issues)
- Desmonds meets Daniel for the second time before Daniel arrived on the Island. (Character connections)
- The clock at the start of the episode shows 8:15. (The Numbers)
- The ticket Ben takes at the butcher’s shows 342. (The Numbers)
- When Locke is separated from The Others, he is left in the jungle with nothing but a knife and his wits; literally the situation he longed for in Walkabout. (Irony)
- Daniel tricks the other people to leave him alone at the Hatch, so that he can speak to Desmond alone. (Deceptions and Cons)
Storyline analysis
- Sayid kills two men in the safehouse. (Crimes)
- Juliet and Sawyer are seen as new leading figures for the castaways. (Leadership)
- Kate considers calling Jack but decides not to. (Relationships)
- Sawyer “slaps” Daniel for not telling what is happening. (Rivalries)
Cultural references
- “Shotgun Willie” a song by Willie Nelson, from 1973, by the album of the same name.
- A Christmas Carol: Sawyer calls himself “the Ghost of Christmas Future.”
Literary techniques
- The episode begins with a record skipping, this is later used as a metaphor for how the island is moving through time. (Foreshadowing)
- Kate tells Aaron that the train in his cartoon won’t go into a tunnel because he will never come out, foreshadowing their evacuation from their home moments later, and perhaps the return to the island. (Foreshadowing)
- Faraday inisits that they can’t change the past or stop what’s happening, and Sawyer asks him who can; Faraday doesn’t respond. This foreshadows Faraday’s statement that Desmond is special and the “rules” don’t apply to him, implying that Desmond can, in fact, change things. (Foreshadowing)

Jack remains adamant that they must lie, and asks if they are all OK with it. Reluctantly, everyone agrees, except Hurley who believes that people will listen if they tell the truth. Jack tells Hurley that lying will protect the people left on the island from Charles Widmore. Penny tells Hurley that there is no calling her father off, and Jack says that no one will believe him. Sayid agrees that they have no choice, much to Hurley’s dismay. Hurley tells Sayid that he will remember this and that when Sayid needs his help one day, he will not get it.
On-Island
Neil and Rose argue over the current cirumstances.
At the beach, the survivors gather wood in order to start a fire. Whilst Rose and Bernard bicker, Neil “Frogurt” approaches and tells them that they have bigger issues right now. Sawyer and Juliet discuss the Zodiac raft still being with them at this point in time. Juliet mentions that whatever they had with them when they moved is “along for the ride”.
Daniel returns to the beach, and is confronted by Sawyer and Juliet. Daniel lies about what he was doing in the jungle, telling Sawyer that he left his pack in the jungle. Juliet says that they should take the raft and head to a shipping lane, which Daniel immediately disagrees with, saying he needs to calculate a new bearing, and that in order to do that, he needs to determine where they are in time. Miles claims that he’s going to find something for people to eat, whilst Juliet looks on skeptically.
The beach camp, after the unexpected attack.
At night, Bernard is still attempting to get a fire going, whilst the other survivors wait impatiently, especially Frogurt. Charlotte says she has a headache still and states that she forgot her mother’s maiden name earlier, a fact that Daniel doesn’t seem to find odd. Charlotte asks if he knows what’s happening to her. Miles strolls out the jungle with a dead boar, saying he found it. Frogurt begins to insult the survivors about their current predicament, and is shot with a flaming arrow. Suddenly, the camp is set upon by a rain of fiery arrows. The survivors begin to run for the trees, with both Miles and Sawyer narrowly escaping. As they escape, several other survivors are shot down.
Later on, Sawyer and Juliet trek through the jungle to meet up with the others. They hide as they see figures walk by in front of them, figures they don’t recognize. As they debate their identity, they are grabbed by a group of men who want to know what they’re doing on “our island”. One of the men asks them about how many of them there are, and how they got there. He threatens to cut Juliet’s hand off whilst Sawyer attempts to reason with him. Suddenly, two of the men are knocked out, and Juliet grabs one of their guns. Just as Sawyer is about to be killed by one of the men, a knife flies through the air and kills the man. Locke reveals himself to the group.
Off-Island (Three years later)
Ana Lucia’s ghost instructs Hurley on his next moves.
Hurley drives an unconscious Sayid somewhere safe after the events at the safe-house. He attracts the attention of a police vehicle by hitting a trashcan on the curb and he anxiously pulls over. As the police officer approaches the window, Hurley opens it and realizes it is Ana Lucia. She scolds him for pulling over and driving like a maniac. She asks Hurley what he would have done had she been a real cop, especially because there are pictures of Hurley covered in blood with a gun in his hand. She instructs him to get some more clothes and then to take Sayid to someone he trusts. Advising him to stay away from cops and not get arrested she turns to leave, but pauses and nonchalantly tells him that Libby “says hi”. Hurley looks behind and realizes there is no sign of Ana Lucia, or a police car. Hurley starts the engine, and drives off.
Hurley is recognized as an Oceanic Six.
Later on, Hurley attempts to revive Sayid on his own, but to no avail. He takes some cash off Sayid and walks into a gas station where he buys some new clothes for himself. The girl at the cash register says she recognizes him, and Hurley sees a report on the TV screen behind her about him and the murdered people that Sayid killed at Santa Rosa and the safe-house. Hurley says that she’s got him mixed up with someone else, but she claims that he’s the guy who won the lottery and crashed in that plane. Hurley leaves quickly and drives off.
As Hurley pulls out of the gas station, Kate pulls in. Not knowing what to do, she contemplates phoning Jack, but thinks better of it. Her phone begins to ring however, and she answers it to a person we cannot hear. She expresses relief that the person is in LA, and they agree on a place to meet. When Aaron asks where they are going, Kate responds “to see a friend”.
Kate takes Aaron to a penthouse of a large hotel where they meet Sun. Sun shows Kate pictures of Ji-Yeon and states that she’d like Aaron and Ji-Yeon to play together. Kate tells Sun about the lawyers who came to visit her asking about testing her and her “son”. Sun tells Kate that they weren’t interested in exposing their lie, they just wanted Aaron. Sun tells Kate that she needs to do what she must to take care of Aaron, and that she didn’t rescue Jin from the freighter like she said she would. Kate apologizes, but Sun says she doesn’t blame her for what she did. She asks Kate how Jack is.
Ben and Jill discuss Locke’s corpse.
In a hotel room, Ben is seen taking something out of a vent space, and placing it in his bag without Jack noticing. He tells Jack that he flushed his pills down the toilet, to which Jack responds that he was going to do the same thing. Ben tells Jack to go home and pack anything that he wants “in this life”, because he won’t ever be coming back. “Good” Jack replies. Ben says he’s going to keep Locke’s body safe. Jack asks Ben why he needs to keep Locke’s body “safe” if he’s dead. Later on, Ben arrives at a butchers and begins talking to a woman named Jill. She seems to know who he is, and seems to know that he has Locke’s coffin in his van. She comments that everything is moving “right on schedule”. Ben tells Jill to keep Locke’s body safe, or everything they’re about to do, won’t matter at all.
Hurley and David look at Sayid’s unconscious body.
David Reyes is at his mansion, watching an episode of Exposé, when Hurley arrives carrying Sayid on his back. David claims that Sayid is barely breathing. Hurley tells him what happened, but David believes he’s lying to him. The LAPD arrive at the mansion, and David tells them that he hasn’t seen Hurley. Hurley doesn’t give much away when question by his father, but tells him they can’t go to a hospital, and Hurley says he has an idea. Hurley notes that the police are staking out the mansion, and David asks his son if he in fact, is crazy. Hurley tells him he has a good reason to lie. Carmen Reyes returns home, and tells Hurley that Sayid is not breathing. As Carmen asks Hurley what is going on, David leaves the house in his car, nervously waving at the police as he drives past. Hurley tells his mother all about the island, the whole truth and breaks down. She comforts him and says she doesn’t understand it, but she believes him. David meets up with Jack and asks if he can trust him. David shows Jack that he has Sayid in the back of his jeep. Jack wants to know who’s with Hurley at the mansion, and takes Sayid to a hospital. David tells Jack to stay away from Hurley. At the hospital, Jack rings Ben and tells him that Sayid has shown up. Ben looks worried about this. Jack treats Sayid, who awakens and attacks Jack. When he realizes who it is, he calms down and expresses anxiety about where Hurley is and who is with him.
Ben shows up at Hurley’s house. much to Hurley’s surprise.
Back at the mansion, Ben scares Hurley by appearing at his house. Hurley doesn’t trust Ben, but Ben attempts to persuade him to come with him, saying that he’ll take Hurley to Sayid and Jack. He tells him that he can help him, and get him back to the island where he won’t have to lie anymore, where it’ll all be over. Hurley thinks about it for a moment, before running out the front door and turning himself in to the police outside, telling them to get him away from the house, where Ben stands and looks on as Hurley smiles.
Ms. Hawking writes out several equations on a chalkboard.
Later on, a hooded figure is seen in a strange room with computers and a large board on which she writes various equations. A pendulum can be seen in the background, tracing with a chalk on a large map. The figure appears to be working out the co-ordinates of the island. The figure goes up some stairs into a room where we see Ben lighting some candles, similarly to a church. Ben is told he only has 70 hours, to which he says he needs more. The figure is revealed to be Ms. Hawking. She states that if Ben can’t get all the Oceanic 6 back on the island, then “God help us all”.

metalman777Lost Dharma wants you, Lost, Lost ARG
Ok, if you are a Lost geek like me, you’ve probably already signed up for the new ARG Lost game, Dharma Wants You. If you haven’t, then I just want to share what’s going on so far.
Above is a picture of the website…not so much information yet. As you might have read in my previous Lost post, a new video surfaced at Comic Con 08 this year. In it, Professor Pierre Chang begged for the DHARMA Initiative to be reconstructed.
So, if you go to dharmawantsyou.com, you can become a part of the DHARMA Initiative.
(you can even download your own ID cards!)
So far there is only one test. Below is the explanation for the test.

What makes this test interesting is the fact that you can cheat! And the cheat might be an important clue…
A blog entry on DarkUFO entitled Pressurized Spacial Judgment Evaluation = Press Space? seems to think the cheat is intentional.
Stay tuned for anymore information. I’ll pass it along as soon as I hear it!

We finally have some new Lost tidbits! YAY! January ’09 can’t get here fast enough! Comic-Con ’08 has come and gone and now there is a new video to make us all ask a thousand questions and speculate what the heck Season 5 is going to be about! (check out the Dharmawantsyou website!)
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/dn_dNsaz-AA&hl=en&fs=1]
Hello. My name is Dr. Marvin Candle and I….you know what? Forget it. No point in games anymore, right? If you’re watching this now, you already know that my name is, my real name is Pierre Cheng and I…
(baby cries off screen and the Doctor looks over. He gets up from the couch and yells: “Jennifer! Just take him outside, please! I’ve got one chance at this.” He sits back down.)
[static] …professor of theoretical astro-physics from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was brought [static] years ago to conduct experiments to study the Kerr metric solution to the Einstein field equation and… [static] If I can hold this pinhole open long enough, you should be receiving my message roughly thirty years [static] If you’re… [static] The American president is a man named George W. Bush and you share digital information instantaneously on something called “Internet”. And, unfortunately, my colleagues and I are all dead and if [static], of a violent purge, one that we are apparently powerless to escape. (he looks down sadly at his left arm, which looks normal, and grasps it with his other normal hand). [static] This information comes to me from a source that has proven himself to be credible.
Other man: None of that matters. It doesn’t matter. Just get to it, please! [static]
Dr. Cheng: Because, if this transmission is successful, it’s proof the work I’ve been doing here is valid. This place, it has extraordinary properties. I’m begging you, no matter what’s happened, it’s imperative that the DHARMA Initiative be reconstituted. You have to continue to research [static] and you have to do it now. Time is not just of the essence, it is the essence. Perhaps you’ll be able to find a way to save us, to change the past and to [static] (something) You can’t let it….
Other man: This is useless! Alright? It’s just useless. They’ll never gonna see this. How do I turn this off?
Dr. Cheng: No, no! W-w-what are you doing?
Other man: How do you turn it off?
Dr. Cheng: No! What are you doing? [static]
pretty interesting stuff! So just what is this Professor Cheng talking about? I’ve read that the camera man in this video is none other than our favorite Daniel Faraday! How does that work? Does the crying baby grow up to be the Ghostbuster named Miles?
Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse also fielded a lot of questions during their panel. Click here if you want to see the video from the actual panel. Below is the transcript (with a big thanks to Not Confused Just Lost for posting it first!):

Here’s a list of all the Questions the audience asked Darlton and the answers they received (also the prizes each person got):
Q: When the hatch imploded and the sky turned purple did the island move then? Like it did when Ben moved it (more recently)?
Damon Lindeloff: No. But something happened and that’s an excellent question.
Prize: an Oceanic Airlines bottle of water
Q: Are Jin and Locke dead?
Carlton Cuse: Jin and Locke will still be on the show in some form. You’ve not seen the last of either of those characters. You know, dead is a relative term. In the timelines of those characters there’s still a lot of story to be told.
Prize: Jin’s panda bear doll.
Q: Is “Lost” coming back next year?
DL: We’re doing 17 hours in February 2009 and 17 hours in 2010.
Prize: A “Lost” calendar.
Q: Favorite episode and favorite season?
CC: ‘The Constant’ would be my favorite episode. I think in terms of favorite seasons, the first one was so amazing and we were trying to figure everything out; yeah, just the excitement and terror of it.
DL: The Season One finale with the raft launch and all of that stuff. It was back when the show could be hopeful before it degraded into despair. And for favorite season? Season Four; everyone worked really hard. You will be rewarded for hanging in until Season Six.
CC: For us it was a huge advantage to get an end date to the show; it really reinvigorated us.
Prize: Apollo bar and an Apollo T-shirt.
Q: I just wanted to slap you around for the Jin and Sun episode — you guys are naughty.
DL: For slapping us around, here are some “Heroes” DVDs. It’s a much better show than ours. Enjoy!
Prize: “Heroes” DVD box set
Q: Are we going to get a (Danielle Rousseau) flashback? Will you definitively say in front of 6,500 of us that there will be one?
CC: We will say this: You will see Rousseau’s story. But to use the word flashback would be disingenuous. We’re going to do flashbacks and flash-forwards next season, but we’ll mostly be doing something different.
DL: Danielle Rousseau will be in Season Five.
Prize: “Lost” luggage tags
At this point, someone asked a question about whether production would continue under “the new SAG contract,” to which Lindeloff replied that he wasn’t aware there was a new one yet — there isn’t — but reassured shooting would continue regardless. For asking the question, the guy received the best worst prize of the lot: Photographs of the actors who played short-lived Nikki and Paulo. “Who wouldn’t want that?” Lindeloff asked. “Yes, two SAG actors,” said Cuse.
Q: Do your own mothers not know how the show will end?
CC: They like to be in the dark.
Prize: A life jacket signed by all the writers.
Q: Where is our special guest?
DL: The actors [are] scattered all over the world at the moment, so it’s almost a Herculean task to get any of them out here.
Prize: Signed box set of all seasons of the show.
Q: What happened to [the dog] Vincent?
DL: Vincent made it and will appear in season five. Safe to say he’ll make it to the end of the show.
Prize: Polar bear doll
Q: Are Jack and Kate your one true pairing and will they end up together?
CC: There it is. Someone who asked a real question, a ballsy question that gets right to the heart of the story and the mythology — we can’t answer it.
DL: Sir, we can not tell you the answer to that question. Obviously we’re very invested in that relationship.
Prize: Jack Shepherd autographed doll … delivered by surprise guest Matthew Fox.
Q: Will Kate ever see Sawyer again?
DL: Not if Jack has anything to say about it! No, yes, Kate will see Sawyer again
Prize: A signed “Lost” poster
Q: Now that the island has moved, what happened to the survivors and Daniel Faraday?
DL: You refer to the Zodiac boat and the non-line speakers, right? Sadly, there is a monsoon a comin’ for some…
Prize: An authentic Faraday tie. “For those of you wondering why Faraday is wearing a tie on the island, stay tuned,” Lindeloff said.
Q: Flash-forwards, how are you going to limit yourselves?
DL: When Season Five starts, you won’t know where and when you are. The way we’re gonna tell stories is gonna be different too.
CC: We organized a bit differently; if we were constrained by FF and FB that that was not gonna be the best way to tell our stories.
Prize: Hanso foundation hat.
Q: How does this show end?
CC: It ends well, we hope — we can’t answer that.
Prize: A six pack of Dharma drinks
Q: Do you ever come up with stuff like, let’s make Kate a dude, or do you have it all planned out from the beginning?
CC: You can’t have It all planned out. We actually try to write ourselves into corners every day. What we try to avoid is filming that without knowing the answers. We try to puzzle our way out of situations.
Prize: DryErase eraser signed by CC and DL
Q: How old is Richard Alpert and how many toes does he have?
CC: That’s a really good question. He is quite old. We’ve hinted that people age differently on the island and people heal. That is hopefully an engaging mystery that will keep you tuning in. You will learn more about Richard Alpert.
DL: You’re gonna see his toes too.
Prize: A T-shirt that says: “I asked a Richard Alpert a question and all I got what this lousy T-shirt.”

metalman777Lost, videos Lost

Wow….I just don’t know what to say other than wow! Lost, as usual, was great tonight and surprisingly forthcoming with answers!
Who would’ve thought that Sawyer would sacrifice himself and that Jack would have ended up playing the long con on the entire world? I just have one question: what happened to Sawyer’s shirt as he swam in the ocean? Are he and Drunk Julie gonna hook up? Hurley can beat ?EKO? at chess? What happened to Jeremy Bentham?
Did you catch the commercial right before the last segment in part two? The commercial for the Octagon Global Recruiting?
[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=V0PkRJRSv3M]
The days listed in the commercial are actually the days of the San Diego Comic-Con where the Lost producers usually reveal something pretty big (like last year’s Orchid Video).
Ok, that’s more than one question, but that IS how Lost operates. Answer question, raise five more!
So, here is an initial recap from our friends at Lostpedia.com! Please, leave some comments and let me know what you thought of the Season 4 Finale.
On the Island
In the Orchid’s Greenhouse
Alpert comes to the rescue
Jack and Sawyer catch up with Hurley at the Orchid. John is trying to figure out how to enter the station. Jack approaches Locke, and the two have a “leadership discussion” according to Hurley. Locke tells Jack that he has to lie when he gets off the island to protect it. Locke also tries to persuade Jack to stay on the island and fulfill his destiny, suggesting that the island is a place where miracles happen. Jack says there’s no such thing as miracles, and chooses to leave with Hurley and Sawyer for the helicopter, although John warns them that Keamy would be there.
Ben is taken by Keamy to the helicopter where they find Frank handcuffed. Kate claims to be running from The Others, and finds the helicopter. The Others surprise Keamy’s men and kill them. Richard Alpert shoots Keamy in the back, and he is left presumed dead. Kate frees Ben from his restraints. She heads back to the helicopter while Ben heads back to the Orchid.
On the beach
Dan comes back from the freighter with an empty raft. He tells Juliet about the freighter and how it is going to try to get a close as possible. Dan is going to get water whilst Juliet gets the next group ready. She thanks him for helping the survivors.
Miles, confronted by Rose
Meanwhile, Miles is helping himself to food supplies under Rose’s watchful eye. Charlotte is packing her bag. Dan arrives and tells the two of them that he is leaving in 10 minutes and they need to be on the boat. Miles tells him that, despite knowing that the situation is dire, he is going to stay. Dan then leaves.
Charlotte doesn’t want to leave
Miles is surprised that Charlotte wants to leave the Island, after all that time she spent “trying to get back” here. Charlotte asks what he means, but Miles is evasive.
Some time later, Charlotte approaches Dan and tells him that she is going to stay on the island “for now”. Dan points that “now” on the island could mean “forever”. Charlotte replies “Would it make any sense if I told you I’m still looking for where I was born?” They part affectionately and Daniel, now alone, goes back on the crowded raft. Juliet tells Dan that she will not leave the island until everyone is safe aboard the freighter, reassuring Dan that “we’ll still be here when you get back”. Dan seems troubled. He boards the raft with a few survivors, and they leave for the freighter.
In the Orchid
Locke and Ben at the Orchid
Ben finds Locke with Jack. Locke has not yet explained to Jack that they are going to move the Island but there is no time. Locke goes with Ben in the elevator, and the two descend.
Locke and Ben exit the elevator and find themselves in the Orchid Station. As they walk inside, Locke observes the various equipment and a nearby television. He looks to Ben and asks if that’s the “magic box“. Ben looks back at Locke with an absurd look and answers “no”. Ben then offers Locke a video tape to answer all his questions about the station. Locke puts it in the television and Dr. Edgar Halliwax appears. In the video, Halliwax instructs to not place metal objects inside the “vault”. The vault is seen as a chamber that holds the power to travel time to whatever is inside it. Locke looks at Ben and sees him piling metal objects inside the vault.
The elevator opens to reveal Keamy – still alive. Keamy pulls out a knife and carefully enters the Orchid. He begins to explain to Ben, who is hiding away, that if Ben kills him the entire freighter will be destroyed and many innocent people killed. He begins to mock Alex’s death, but suddenly Locke appears. Locke explains that he has no conflict with Keamy and that Keamy should allow the innocent people on the freighter to live. Ben, noticing Keamy is distracted, charges out with his collapsible baton and attacks, knocking the knife from Keamy’s hand. Once Keamy is knocked down, Ben grabs his fallen knife starts stabbing him repeatedly. Locke pulls him off in an attempt to save Keamy and those on the freighter, but the damage is done and Keamy is left dying. Keamy tells Ben that Widmore will find him. Despite Locke’s best efforts to save him, Keamy dies. Locke tells Ben that he just killed everyone on the freighter, to which Ben coldly responds, “So?”
Ben sacrifices himself for the Island
After killing Keamy, Ben seeks to go beyond the vault. Locke stops him and demands to know why Ben killed Keamy, knowing it would end the lives of many innocent people on the freighter. Ben admits it was the wrong thing to do and that his grief over Alex clouded his judgment. Ben tells Locke not to make the same mistakes as the new leader. Locke is subsequently confused. Ben tells him that there is a price to pay to move the Island. The person that moves it must leave it and never return there. Locke is reluctant to let Ben leave but Ben offers a handshake, apologizing for all the misery he has inflicted on Locke. Locke accepts the handshake and Ben darts off into the vault.
Inside, the explosion opened a pathway into the island interior. Ben goes into a tunnel that lead to a series of stairs. After falling down and cutting himself, Ben finds himself inside a dark and icy room. There, across from Ben, is established a wall with a large wheel. Ben proceeds to turn the wheel, though with great difficulty. The more the wheel is turned, the brighter the room becomes. Outside, the entire Island emanates an otherworldly noise. Suddenly, a light envelopes the Island and everything within the light disappears. Ben, himself, is shot forward through time to the year 2005, in the Sahara Desert, where he begins the events of The Shape of Things to Come.
On the Freighter
The freighter is destroyed
Desmond, Jin, and Kevin/Michael discover the C4 rigged to the boat. Michael finds a canister of liquid nitrogen and sprays it on the bomb’s battery to freeze it and buy time before the bomb goes off. Desmond and Jin frantically search for a way to safely disarm the explosives. When Keamy dies, the bomb gets armed, but does not explode immediately due to Michael’s ingenuity in keeping the battery cool with the nitrogen. With the bomb armed, Jin tells Desmond to leave and stays behind to attempt to determine a way to disarm the bomb. When the helicopter arrives, Jin tries to run to the door, but he misses the helicopter taking off. Christian Shephard appears, and tells Michael “you can go now”, and then the boat explodes.
On the Helicopter
The helicopter leaves the Island
Frank, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid and Hurley board the helicopter and take off to the freighter. Along the way, Frank notices that the helicopter is leaking gas, from a stray bullet hole. Because fuel is so low, Frank doesn’t think they’ll make it to the freighter. He says they have to figure out how to drop 200 lbs. Sawyer kisses Kate, whispers something in her ear, and jumps from the helicopter, enabling the rest of the passengers to make it to the freighter. Once they find the freighter, Desmond is frantically waving at them and telling them there is a bomb about to go off. Frank lands anyway, and hurriedly starts filling up the tank and patching the leak. Everyone gets back on board, including Sun, although she begs them to wait for Jin. However, Frank takes off immediately, and Sun is frantic. When the boat explodes, Sun is distraught.
While heading back to the island, a bright light floods the sky and the island vanishes. Low on fuel and with nowhere to land, Frank tells them to put on life-jackets and prepare for impact. The survivors swim towards the life raft thrown into the water by Sayid moments before impact. Frank rescues Desmond, who is floating face down in the water. Desmond is not breathing, but Jack resuscitates him.
Back on the beach
Juliet is on the beach, alone, with a bottle of Rum. Sawyer arrives on the beach having leapt from the helicopter. Seeing the bottle, asks what Juliet is celebrating but Juliet tells him that she is not celebrating, pointing to the smoke emanating from the destroyed freighter.
After the Island is moved
The people on the life-raft arrives near the Searcher
Jack, Kate, Aaron, Sayid, Hurley, Sun, Frank, and Desmond continue to float on the life-raft. Everyone is quiet until Hurley observes that “Locke moved the Island”. Jack becomes agitated and disagrees. As the two argue, Frank notices a nearby light and realizes it is a ship. Everyone begins shouting and the ship begins pulling up beside the life-raft. At this point Jack suddenly remembers Locke telling him to lie about what has happened to them, realizes that it must be done, and hastily shares this plan with the others in the life raft.
To each other’s suprise, Desmond and Penelope reunite
Onboard the Searcher, a crewman, who is actually Henrik from the listening station frantically moves back and forth and calls out for “Ms. Widmore”. Penelope exits the bridge to see what was happening. She notices Desmond and the two make eye contact. Desmond jumps onto some netting to pull himself up to the ship and rushes to meet Penelope on the deck. Reunited, Desmond quickly introduces Penelope to the others from the life raft. Jack tells Penelope seriously that they need to talk.
A week later, the Oceanic Six prepare to depart from Penelope’s freighter with a well established cover story, while Desmond and Frank stay behind. Jack tells Desmond to be careful now that they know what Widmore is capable of, then quotes Desmond — “See you in another life, brother”. The Oceanic Six get on the life-raft and head for the island of Sumba.
Flashforward
Hurley
An older Walt visits Hurley
Walt visits Hurley in the mental institute, with his grandmother standing by to make sure Hurley is “safe”. Walt asks why nobody came to visit him after their rescue. Hurley apologizes, but Walt adds that one person did come to see him: Jeremy Bentham. Walt asks why Bentham and the Oceanic Six are all lying. Hurley whispers that they are lying to protect the people that remained on the Island.
Sayid
Sayid arrives at Hurley’s mental institute late at night and executes a man in the car park who has been stalking Hurley for over a week. Sayid finds Hurley playing chess, apparently alone, opposite an empty chair. Sayid wants Hurley to come with him, “somewhere safe”. Hurley replies that he hasn’t seen him in “like forever” and doesn’t understand why he should join him. Sayid replies that “circumstances have changed”: Bentham is dead, having supposedly killed himself 2 days ago. Hurley doesn’t want to call Bentham by this alias and is about to call him by his real name but Sayid stops him, adding that they are being watched. Hurley says that he has been regular conversations with dead people, and the last thing he needs is paranoia. Sayid replies that he has just killed a man who has been watching Hurley for a week and that paranoia keeps him alive. Sayid assures Hurley that they are not going back to the island, merely “somewhere safe”. Hurley accepts, but just as he is about to leave the room, he plays one more time on his chessboard, beating the opponent supposedly in the empty chair: Mr. Eko.
Sun
Sun goes to see Widmore in London
Sun approaches a restaurant in London while talking to her mother and Ji Yeon, now speaking, on the phone. Charles Widmore emerges from the restaurant. Sun approaches him and presents herself as the daughter of Paik, and the managing director of Paik Industries. Widmore recognizes the name and inquires about her father. Sun confronts Widmore with the knowledge that he is aware of her true identity, adding that Widmore knows that they have been lying abput their experiences. She then suggests that she and Widmore have common interests. She gives him her Paik business card, suggesting he call when ready to talk. Finally she reminds Widmore that “they are not the only one who left the Island”. Widmore, surprised, asks why she would want to cooperate with him. Without answering, she leaves.
Kate
Kate wakes in her home to the sound of footsteps, but no one is there. The phone rings: a male voice, speaking in reverse, says “The island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late”. She hears footsteps again and retrieves a gun from her closet. Checking on Aaron, she confronts the intruder bending over his crib, only to find that it is Claire. Claire warns Kate not to bring Aaron back to the island. Suddenly Kate wakes up a second time and quickly checks on Aaron: there is no intruder and no sign of Claire.
Jack
John Locke is revealed to be the late Jeremy Bentham
Picking up exactly where the final scene of “Through The Looking Glass” left off, with Jack calling after Kate’s car “We have to go back!”, Kate reverses the car, gets out, and confronts Jack. She condemns Jack for wanting to go back to the Island, for calling her for 2 days straight whilst high on pills and for showing her the obituary for Jeremy Bentham. She explains that Jeremy Bentham had met with her and she knew from the first moment that he was crazy, and that she can’t believe Jack would trust him. Jack says he listened to Bentham because he was told that it was the only way to save Kate and Aaron. Kate slaps him for abandoning she and Aaron. Jack tries to apologize, but Kate tells him she spent the last three years trying to forget all the horrible things that happened in the days that they left. She tells him she won’t go back, gets back in the car and speeds away.
Jack, still apparently drunk and high, drives to the funeral parlor after hours. He breaks in and approaches the casket, noticing that no one has yet signed the release form for Bentham’s body. Ben suddenly enters the room. Jack says that Bentham had told him Ben was off the Island, Jack and Kate having spoken to Bentham about a month prior. Bentham had said that after Jack left the island “some very bad things happened” and it was Jack’s fault for leaving. Bentham added that Jack had to come back. Ben replies that he has heard about Jack riding passenger planes, hoping they’ll crash. Ben describes this as “very dark”. Ben tells Jack he is here to let him know that the Island wont let him come alone: “all of you have to go back”. Jack says he doesn’t know where Sayid is, Hurley is insane, Sun blames Jack for Jin’s death, and Kate doesn’t even want to talk to him anymore. Ben says that this is the only way: all of them have to do it together, and that Ben has a few ideas about how it is to be done and is willing to help. However he specifies that all of them must return, including the deceased Bentham, who is revealed to be none other than John Locke.
Trivia
General
- Penelope’s boat is named the Searcher.
- Each year the producers have a special name for a secret scene in that year’s finale. This year’s special name turned about to be literal – “Frozen Donkey Wheel”, referring to the frozen wheel Ben has to turn to activate the teleportation of the island.
- During her flash-forward dream sequence, Kate receives a garbled phone call. When played backwards, the message states: “The Island needs you. You have to go back before it’s too late.”
- As the Oceanic Six arrive on Membata, the scenery of the Membata’s shore is EXACTLY the same as Elliot’s second flashback from LOST: Via Domus, even the camera angle and position is the same as the game’s. This most likely was done on purpose.

Production notes
- This is the only episode of season 4 in which all credited cast members appear.
- This is the second time an episode of Lost features footage filmed outside of the United States. The London scene between Sun and Charles Widmore was filmed in London due to Alan Dale performing on stage in the West End production of Spamalot during filming of the second block of Season 4. The first time was during The Shape of Things to Come.
Bloopers and continuity errors
- Jack’s beard is visibly shorter than it was in “Through the Looking Glass“
- In the scene where Ben is trying to turn the large wheel in the icy cavern, he sticks his crowbar into the hole at the end of one of the pegs. As he does so, the teeth of the crowbar face to the right from the viewer’s perspective. However, in the next scene where he’s pressing his face against it, the teeth face left. When he removes it from the hole, the teeth face right again.
- When the Oceanic 6 wash ashore in Sumba, the natives speak in Thai, not Indonesian. One native utters the phrase “Mah Nee” which means “Come Here” in Thai.
- Desmond explains that severing the connection from the explosive to the battery would automatically detonate the failsafe. While these failsafes do exist, freezing the battery (hence stopping the electrical connectivity) would still cause the explosive to detonate.
- On Day 91 (“Through the Looking Glass“), Penny told Charlie she was not on a boat. On Day 100, she is on the Search,a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

metalman777Lost, videos Lost

OH MY GOODNESS!! Lost was so awesome last night! The show was near perfect with their multi-faceted flashbacks between Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sun. Jack finds out that Claire was (is?) his sister and we find out the ageless Richard Alpert has his own army! Sweetness!!
We finally get to see the Orchid station. Here is the video from last year’s Comic-con that introduced us to the Orchid station.

As always, here is the awesome recap from Lostpedia.com. I suggest you actually click on the link and read everything for yourself! For more info, also check out The Lost Blog and The Tail Section.
Trivia
General
The Geronimo Jackson record jacket at Hurley’s party
- “Membata,” the name of the island Oceanic claimed the Six lived on, is Indonesian for “doubt” or “uncertainty”.
- Sawyer refers to the Barracks as “New Otherton,” the producers’ nickname for the location.
- A Geronimo Jackson record jacket can be seen near the DJ at Hurley’s party.
- The mirror Ben uses is called a heliograph[1], or signaling mirror[2]. They were commonly used by military forces in the early half of the 20th century. They are still included in survival kits for emergency signaling to search and rescue aircraft.
- At Hurley’s surprise birthday party, Sayid is seen sporting a wedding band, implying that he and Nadia have been married by this point.
Production notes
- Claire does not appear in this episode.
- The Oceanic 6 were aboard a United States Coast Guard (USCG)[3] Lockheed HC-130[4] search and rescue transport aircraft being flown by two USCG Lieutenants (O-3).
- The Lockheed HC-130 number 1717 was acquired by the USCG under an US Air Force (USAF) aircraft purchase contract addendum in 1986[5].
- Prior to being designated 1717 by the USCG, the USAF originally numbered the aircraft 0420[6], another reference to the Numbers.
- The Oceanic 6 landed at Kalaeloa Airport[7], home of the Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Barbers Point[8], as indicated by the plane’s markings and the distinctive air traffic control tower[9].
- The press conference was most likely held in the CGAS hangars[10].
- Several large sea turtles can be seen on the daytime beach shots. As the turtles are heavily protected by the government, it is likely that the crew was unable to remove the turtles from the shots before filming.
Bloopers and continuity errors
- In the scene where Jack and Kate bump into Sawyer and Miles, Kate is seen talking to Jack with only Sawyer in the background. After a quick shot of Jack turning around, the camera returns to Kate which suddenly has Miles prominently in the background.
- The lower four digits displaying “2342” on the Camaro’s instrument panel would not appear on a 1970-1972 Camaro’s odometer. Everything else about the odometer seems accurate, however, so the remaining digits were most likely added to ensure that all of the numbers appeared.
- The lower four digit display is suspose to represent a trip meter, but, there was no trip meter on a 1970-72 Camaro. A trip meter did not appear on the dashboard instrument cluster until 1984.
- Ben retracts his baton just before handing it to Locke. Ben easily retracts the baton. Retracting telescopic batons with such ease is usually impossible, unless it was deployed extremely weakly which would render the baton less effective in any combat situation. Also, there is no sign of Ben ever extending the baton. Extending the baton would make it impossible to fit in a pocket. It is safe to assume that showing Ben retracting the baton was purely for dramatic purposes because there was no scenario shown that would have allowed him to deploy the weapon, and furthermore deploy it a weak manner that would be less effective in combat and allow him to retract it so easily.
